PE

What does PE look like at Bledlow Ridge School?
Intent
At Bledlow Ridge School, we aim to develop a love of sport and physical activity in all children and inspire them to become lifelong active people when they leave KS2. We want all children to develop and improve the fundamental skills needed to access all physical activity such as invasion games, gymnastics or dance. Children will understand the importance of healthy competition against either themselves (personal best) or other children, the importance of an active and healthy lifestyle and the role that physical activity plays in achieving this, how to swim, basic survival skills in water and life skills such as team work, independence and resilience.
Implementation
● Pupils participate in two high quality lessons per week.
● Teachers deliver one lesson per week using 'Get Set 4 PE' planning resources.
● One session per week is delivered by experienced sports coaches from Premier Sports.
● Children are offered the opportunity to attend a variety of extra-curricular clubs.
● Children are invited to attend competitive sporting opportunities locally.
● Year 5 and Year 6 children are invited to become sporting ambassadors for the school, assisting with sporting events and inter-house events across the school.
● Year 4 children complete a 10 week swimming course at Princes Risborough Swimming Pool.
● Parents and Carers are updated on regular PE activities available via the school newsletter and school website.
Overview of EYFS Provision
Physical development is one of the three prime areas within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Each prime area is divided into Early Learning Goals. For physical development these are:

● Moving and handling - skills enabling children to show good control and coordination in large and small movements. Children are able to handle equipment and tools effectively, including pencils for writing.

● Health and self care - children knowing the importance of good health which includes physical exercise and a healthy diet. Children are able to manage their own basic hygiene and personal needs successfully, including dressing and going to the toilet independently.

At Bledlow Ridge School, our children develop these skills through play in our stimulating and active learning environments.

Impact

All PE lessons follow a carefully planed sequence of learning which has a clear progression of skills throughout the key stages. When pupils leave Year 6, they will have experienced a range of PE disciplines and will be able to speak about the skills they have built, using appropriate vocabulary. They will be able to discuss areas they would like to develop. All children participate in the full PE lesson with resources to support their understanding and mobility. Children all have access to an active PE curriculum, whatever their needs or ability. Children will learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, as well as engaging in competitive sports. They will grow up to live happy and healthy lives utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.
